A Background To Sainsbury’s Mobile

Mobile by Sainsbury’s is a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) that runs on the Vodafone UK network and is operated by Sainsbury’s.

The company attempted to set up at MVNO in 2001, running on O2, but it was a short lived venture, only lasting until 2003 with just 60,000 users. Their latest attempt, Mobile by Sainsburys, was launched in July 2013 to compete with other rival supermarket networks offered by Tesco and Asda.

Mobile by Sainsbury’s offers 3 different bundles:

  • For £10, you get 300 minutes, unlimited texts and 500MB of data
  • For £12.50, you get 500 minutes, unlimited texts and 1GB of data
  • For £15, you get 800 minutes, unlimited texts and 2GB of data

All of the bundle packages come with double Nectar points on shopping at their supermarkets and fuel for the 30 days that the bundle is active. The standard rates that would apply after using the bundle amounts are 8p per minute, 4p a text and 20p per MB. By not offering long term contracts, it allows occasional users to benefit from the low standard rates as well as giving frequent users extra value for their money.

The coverage for Mobile by Sainsbury’s is the same as Vodafone, meaning there is 99% of the country that can get a 2G signal and roaming is available in more than 200 countries worldwide.

Sainsbury’s Mobile Is Now Closed

Mobile By Sainsburys’ no longer provides its mobile service. If you are a customer you will no longer be able to send text messages from the network, make calls using them and your mobile internet will function no longer. The device may, however, still be able to connect to your WiFi internet. Contact Sainsbury’s via the phone number at the top of the page if you have outstanding credit and the company will be able to refund it to you. The closure is due to unsuccessful negotiations with Vodafone with whom Mobile By Sainsbury’s partnered to provide their mobile services.
